Pittsburgh Mercy Health System
Pittsburgh Mercy Health System
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh Mercy Health System (PMHS), a network of health care programs, serves some of the most vulnerable residents of southwestern Pennsylvania (www.pmhs.org ).  PMHS originated with the founding in 1847 of the first Mercy Hospital in the world by the Sisters of Mercy.  One hundred sixty years later, in 2008, PMHS refocused its mission from acute-care to community-based services that include:

Mercy Behavioral Health (MBH) offers a full continuum of recovery-oriented, community-based mental health, mental retardation and drug/alcohol treatment and prevention services. With major state and county contracts, and more than 60 sites, MBH is a premier service provider in the Pittsburgh region.

Operation Safety Net is literally world renowned for compassionate street medicine, yet locally based in Pittsburgh. Visit www.becausefoundation.org to view or download the video, One Bridge to the Next which captures the spirit of the respectful care OSN provides for some of the most vulnerable outcasts of our day.

A Child’s Place at Mercy (www.achildsplaceatmercy.org) addresses the needs of abused children, foster children and their parents, offering assistance with abuse identification and treatment. St. Pius Residence is home for low-income elderly persons. The Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program specializes in workshops to educate potential healthcare workers in local church communities. Each of these ministries links directly to the Sisters of Mercy founding spirit.

And the Pittsburgh Mercy Foundation writes for grants and plans events that support the ministries of our system. A second foundation, McAuley Ministries, holds the income from the sale of the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh and makes grants to community organizations throughout the Mercy Corridor—the impoverished strip of geography between the Sisters of Mercy Pittsburgh motherhouse and what is now UPMC Mercy Hospital.
