Catholic Health East Names Chief Medical Information Officer

Michael J. McCoy, M.D.
Newtown Square, Pa., Wednesday, May 12, 2010 –Catholic Health East (CHE), one of the nation’s largest Catholic health systems, is pleased to announce that Michael J. McCoy, M.D., has been selected as the company’s first chief medical information officer (CMIO).
In this role, McCoy will collaborate with information services, the clinical transformation department and other departments in the selection, development and effective implementation of computerized patient record systems. The CMIO will focus on issues of quality, safety, usability, process improvement and ensure that all clinicians are fully engaged in the entire process.
“With our focus on evidence-based care and the enabling technology of the electronic medical records and computerized provider order entry, Dr. McCoy brings much needed expertise to this position,” said Judy Persichilli, CHE president and CEO.
Prior to joining CHE, McCoy was the chief executive of a consultancy and services company focused on physicians and their adoption of technology.
McCoy was a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist for 20+ years, using an electronic medical record (EMR) system in his office for the past several years of practice. He brings extensive experience to CHE with his knowledge on health information technology, having been a CMIO at a multi-hospital system, an executive at both an ambulatory electronic health record (EHR) vendor and an enterprise EHR vendor and a consultant with a large organization focusing on management, clinical transformation and physician adoption strategies.
He serves as The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ (ACOG) national health information technology strategist and co-chairs the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise Patient Care Coordination committee, helping develop clinical interoperability profiles referenced in national standards.
McCoy served on the American National Standards Institute Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and multiple HITSP technical committees (Population, Care Management and Health Records, and Quality committees), and participated in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and HITECH Meaningful Use testimonies before the Health Information Technology Standards and Policy Committees. He also has served on the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Electronic Health Records Executive Board.
He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, and a bachelor of science from Georgia State University. His residency in obstetrics and gynecology was completed in the military and he is a board -certified fellow of the ACOG.
He has been married to his wife, Nancy for over 30 years, after meeting her in El Paso, Tex., during his residency, where she worked in the hospital’s newborn nursery. Though he considers himself to be “mostly from Atlanta, Ga.,” he is moving to Newtown Square from his most recent residence in Nashville, Tenn.
