Catholic Health East Announces Key Leadership Appointments and Promotions

Newtown Square, PA, Tuesday, April 27, 2010 -- Catholic Health East (CHE), one of the nation’s largest Catholic health systems, is pleased to announce several key appointments and promotions to its leadership team. All of these changes are effective May 1, 2010, the same date that Judith Persichilli, CHE’s chief operating officer and CEO designate, officially becomes the health system’s president and chief executive officer. Persichilli succeeds Robert V. Stanek, who is retiring after seven years as CEO and over eighteen years of service to Catholic Health East.

Peter DeAngelis, who has served as CHE’s executive vice president and chief financial officer since 2003, has been promoted to chief operating officer. He will also retain his current CFO duties.

John Johnson, who has served as president and CEO of both Holy Cross Hospital (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Mercy Hospital (Miami, Fla.), is joining the CHE senior management team as executive vice president, of ministry operations, providing oversight for CHE’s ministries in the southeastern United States.

Jenny Barnett, CHE’s vice president and chief accounting officer for the past four years, has been promoted to executive vice president of finance. Barnett will be responsible for financial oversight and stewardship of Catholic Health East and serve as a member of the organization’s senior management team.

Clayton Fitzhugh, who has served as CHE’s vice president and chief human resource officer since 2007, has been promoted to executive vice president of shared services. He will also retain his current human resources responsibilities.

Sharon Duffy, M.S.N., R.N., CHE’s director, acute care services since 2002, has been promoted to vice president of nursing practice. She will be responsible for planning, developing, implementing and managing initiatives impacting the achievement of nursing excellence throughout CHE.

Debbie Coakley has been promoted to vice president of workforce management. She has served CHE for the past 13 years with most recent focus as the productivity champion for the past five years. In this role, Debbie is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and managing strategies that support Catholic Health East's labor management improvement program.

John Capasso, president of CHE’s Continuing Care Management Services Network, will assume additional responsibilities for several regional health corporations including Maxis Health System, Carbondale, Pa., St. James Mercy Health System, Hornell, N.Y., and the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, Pittsburgh, Pa.

“We have restructured our leadership team to best meet the needs of our changing health care environment,” said Persichilli, the new CEO as of May 1. “With our focus on person-centered care and clinical transformation, we are committed to providing the highest quality care to patients and residents throughout our health system, and a rewarding professional environment for our colleagues and physicians.”

Catholic Health East (CHE) is a multi-institutional Catholic health system, co-sponsored by nine religious congregations and Hope Ministries, a Public Juridic Person within Catholic Health East. Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, the System provides the means to ensure the continuation of the Catholic identity and operational strength of the sponsors’ health ministries, which are located in 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida.
