Newtown Square, PA, Wednesday, July 1, 2009 -- Catholic Health East (CHE) has announced the appointment of two new board members, Margaret Taylor, R.S.M., and Mr. Michael J. Rooney. Their three-year appointments were effective earlier this year.

Both Taylor and Rooney had been previously involved with CHE. Taylor was a member of Hope Ministries, one of CHE’s ten sponsoring organizations, and Rooney had served as the chair of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph of the Pines, a regional health corporation and member of CHE.

Taylor is a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Mid-Atlantic Community, and is the first director of Sponsorship for the Mid-Atlantic Community. She was previously assistant director of the office for community development for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia where she was responsible for the development of housing for low income families, and the formation of strategic alliances to achieve physical and economic development in distressed areas of Philadelphia. Her previous experiences include teaching in elementary and secondary schools, the practice of law with the Philadelphia legal services agency for the indigent, and serving as vice-president of the Merion Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. She earned a B.A. from Gwynedd Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, Pa., an M.A. from Assumption College, Worcester, Mass., and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D.C.

Rooney was president for Personnel Consulting for Intelligence Groups of the United States Government. Prior to that, he was president for Gulistan Carpet, Inc. in Aberdeen, N.C., and has worked for many years for Down Badishe, Co., a joint venture of Dow Chemical and BASF, as both an engineer and in sales. He earned a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, R.I., and a M.B.A. from the University of Rhode Island, Princeton, R.I.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to add individuals of the caliber of Sr. Margaret and Mr. Rooney to CHE’s board,” said Jacque Kinder, chair of Catholic Health East’s Board of Directors. “During these challenging times in health care, their leadership and guidance will help our board assure that CHE continues to be a transforming healing presence in the communities we serve.”

Catholic Health East (CHE), a Catholic health system co-sponsored by nine religious congregations and Hope Ministries, is based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. CHE provides the means to ensure the continuation of the Catholic identity and operational strength of the sponsors’ health ministries, which are located in 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida. The CHE system includes 34 acute-care hospitals, four long-term acute-care hospitals, 25 free-standing and hospital-based long-term care facilities, 14 assisted-living facilities, four continuing-care retirement communities, eight behavioral-health and rehabilitation facilities, 32 home health/hospice agencies, and numerous ambulatory and community-based health services. CHE facilities employ approximately 54,000 full-time employees as partners in ministry.
