October 05, 2008

Dr. Regina Benjamin

Newtown Square, Pa., Wednesday, September 24, 2008 Dr. Regina Benjamin, a member of Hope Ministries and former CHE Board member, was one of 25 Americans named by the prestigious MacArthur Foundation as a 2008 MacArthur Fellow.

The MacArthur Foundation, one of the nation’s largest independent foundations with assets of $7 billion and annual grantmaking of approximately $300 million, supports creative people and effective institutions committed to building a more just and peaceful world. It works to defend human rights, advance global conservation and security, make cities better places, and understand how technology is affecting children and society. Each year, through the MacArthur Fellows Program, the Foundation awards five-year, unrestricted fellowships to individuals across all ages and fields who show exceptional merit and promise of continued creative work.

A graduate of Xavier University, Tulane University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Regina M. Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., serves as founder and CEO of Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic, a practice she initiated to help take care of the poor and underserved of her community. The MacArthur Foundation award recognizes Dr. Benjamin’s lifelong efforts to deliver high-quality medical care to diverse, underserved communities in Alabama, and ensuring that the most vulnerable among us are not forgotten.

“Dr. Benjamin is truly deserving of this honor. She is a compassionate, innovative leader, and a powerful advocate for those whom society so often ignores,” said Robert V. Stanek, president and chief executive officer of Catholic Health East. “We are blessed to have Dr. Benjamin in our midst, and we hope that her status as a MacArthur Fellow will enhance her ability to inspire and challenge others to reach out to people in need.”

The new MacArthur Fellows work across a broad spectrum of endeavors and were selected for their creativity, originality, and potential to make important contributions in the future. Each fellow receives $500,000 in “no strings attached” support over the next five years.
