MIAMI, FL (August 7, 2008) – John C. Johnson has been named president and CEO of Mercy Hospital, Miami, effective August 12, 2008.

Johnson, who has served as the president and CEO of Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale for the past ten years, will also retain his role with Holy Cross. Mercy Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital, which are both members of Catholic Health East, one of the nation’s largest Catholic health systems, have formed a “virtual” organization known as CHE-South Florida.

The announcement was made by the Mercy Hospital Board of Trustees and the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, Florida, with the support of Catholic Health East.

In his expanded role, Mr. Johnson will be responsible for overall strategic direction and operating performance for the ministries of Catholic Health East in southeastern Florida.

“John is a talented leader,” said Robert V. Stanek, president and CEO of Catholic Health East. “With his experience in the South Florida marketplace and the relationships he has developed during his ten years with Holy Cross, I think that John will be an equally great asset to Mercy Hospital, its physicians, its employees, and the entire Mercy community. We believe that John is an outstanding choice to help lead Mercy Hospital into the future, and to secure its Mission of being a transforming healing presence in the greater Miami area.”

“John Johnson has demonstrated great success over many years at Holy Cross and we are confident that he will be a welcomed complement to an already great management team and Medical Staff. We are excited about his appointment and look forward to John’s leadership in helping Mercy grow to the next level,” said Sr. Barbara Cekosh, SSJ, chairperson for the Mercy Hospital Board of Trustees and member of the Hospital’s sponsoring congregation, the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, Florida.

“While I did not seek this position, I firmly believe that it provides an opportunity to unify Catholic health care in Southeastern Florida and to better serve the people of this region with the competent, combined energies of these faith-based organizations,” Johnson said. “There are numerous similarities between Holy Cross and Mercy, both serving their respective communities for more than 50 years. It is a privilege to help expand the ministry of each, while building upon each institution’s strengths to help meet the unique needs of both.”
