Catholic Health East Appoints Four New Board Members

Catholic Health East (CHE), one of the nation’s leading Catholic health care systems, announced the appointments of four individuals to its board of directors: Eugene D. Davidson, M.D., Saint Joseph’s Health System, Atlanta, GA; Margaret McCleary, SP, Sisters of Providence, Holyoke, MA; Joan Mullen, SP, Sisters of Providence, Holyoke, MA; and Mary Ann Schimscheiner, RSM, Sisters of Mercy, Regional Community of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY.

"We are pleased…and blessed…to have these new members join our Board," said Earle Bradford, Jr., chair, CHE Board of Directors. "They each bring very special gifts to their new governance roles at Catholic Health East. We look forward to their contributions as we strive to be a transforming, healing presence in the communities we serve."

Dr. Davidson is the chair for the Strategic Planning Committee for Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, a member of Catholic Health East. He is the former chief of staff and served as the interim president and CEO. Previously he was vice chief of staff at Saint Joseph’s and chief of department of surgery. He has also served as staff surgeon at both Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital. Dr. Davidson has a B.A. from the University of Michigan and his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is a member of many boards and committees and is widely published.

Sr. Margaret McCleary, SP, is director, resident programs, Providence Place, Holyoke, MA. Previously she was director of programs for the retired Sisters of Providence and has served the Sisters of Providence in various roles including executive council and secretary general. She was also chief admitting officer at Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield, MA. She is active in her community on many board and committees, and is the recipient of many awards including an honorary doctorate, humane letters, Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA.

She has an associate’s degree from Holyoke Community College, a bachelor’s degree from College of St. Rose, Albany, NY, and a master’s degree in education from Cambridge College, Springfield, MA. She also has a certificate in the spirituality of Christian leadership, Our Lady of Peace Spiritual Life Center, Narragansett, RI.

Sr. Joan Mullen is president of the Sisters of Providence of Holyoke and is a member of many boards including the CHE Sponsors Council, the Sisters of Providence Health System Board, and the Providence Place Board. She is a member of the national and regional Leadership Conference for Women Religious.

She ministered at the former Farren Memorial Hospital in Montague City for 25 years, serving as the supervisor and chief physical therapist in the physical therapy department, as director of nurses and director of the physical therapy department, as assistant administrator, patient care, and as vice president of the hospital. She also opened her own physical therapy office, Montague Physical Therapy, in Turners Falls, MA. She holds a bachelor’s in nursing from Boston College, a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy, and a certificate in hospital administration from St. Louis University, and a master’s in business administration from Western New England College.

Mary Ann Schimscheiner, RSM, is vice president of the Sisters of Mercy, Regional Community of Buffalo. She has served in both the acute and long term care divisions of the Catholic Health System (CHS), a joint operating agreement of CHE. She was the CEO of Kenmore Mercy Hospital for over 18 years and served as vice president of long term care for the multiple nursing homes in CHS.

Active in the community, Sister Mary Ann is currently a member of the CHS Acute Care Board, St. James Mercy Health System Board of Directors, Trocaire College Board, the Warde Center Advisory Board, and Helping Hearts Kids Club Advisory Board. She is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She holds an associate's degree from Trocaire College in Buffalo, NY; a bachelor's degree in Education from Medaille College and a bachelor's degree in nursing from D'Youville College, both in Buffalo; a master's degree in health administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio; and an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Canisius College, Buffalo.

Catholic Health East is a multi-institutional Catholic health system, which is co-sponsored by 12 religious congregations and Hope Ministries, a Public Juridic Person within Catholic Health East. Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, the system provides the means to ensure the continuation of the Catholic identity and operational strength of the Sponsors' health ministries, which are located within 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida.
