CHE Colleagues Co-Author Article on Breaking Down Language Barriers in Health Care

March 6, 2007

Two Catholic Health East colleagues have co-authored an article summarizing their efforts to improve access to health care by addressing language issues that often pose huge barriers to non-English speaking residents.

Eileen Boyle, MSW, president/CEO of Allegany Franciscan Ministries (AFM), Clearwater, Florida and Eric M. Kelly, an AFM regional vice president, collaborated with Corinne Lemal Danielson, MPH, program director, Glades Initiative, Palm Beach, Florida to co-author "Uniting to Promote Language Access". This article appears in the March/April 2007 of Health Progress, and can be viewed online.

The article details how local community organizations in Palm Beach County, Florida, concerned that language differences posed serious health access barriers to the large—and growing—non-English speaking population, formed the Palm Beach County Community Health Alliance in 2005. Allegany Franciscan Ministries was an initial partner and a early funder of this effort. The coalition created the "Language Access Program," a coordinated plan to address these serious access issues caused by language and cultural issues. The article details their results thus far, and their next steps.
