Vice President, Mission and Ethics Appointed at Catholic Health East

May 9, 2006

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - Catholic Health East (CHE), one of the nation's leading Catholic healthcare systems, has announced the recent appointment of Philip J. Boyle, PhD, to the newly created position of Vice President, Mission and Ethics.

Philip J. Boyle, PhD

Boyle has served CHE as Vice President of Ethics since 2002. In that role, he has been responsible for providing strategic direction and services related to clinical and organizational ethics, including consultation, education, and policy review. In his new and additional leadership role for Mission, Boyle will provide leadership, direction, and oversight to system initiatives in the functional areas of mission and core values awareness and integration, spirituality in the workplace, ministry formation, and pastoral/spiritual care.

"Along with many other Catholic health systems, CHE recognizes the integral relationship between Mission leadership and ethics development. With Philip's guidance and leadership, we hope to grow that relationship and provide optimal service to both areas that are central to the life of a Catholic health organization," said Sr. Julie Casey, Executive Vice President, Mission Integration for Catholic Health East.

"Thanks to Philip's expertise and vision, Catholic Health East has become a recognized leader in all areas of ethical development," said Robert V. Stanek, President and Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Health East. "During this time, he has worked closely with System and ministry leaders on a number of critical issues, and I am confident in his ability to work closely with local leaders in anticipating and responding to the current and future spiritual needs of our health care ministry."

Prior to coming to CHE, Boyle was the chief operating officer of The Park Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith and Ethics in Chicago, IL and an associate for Medical Ethics at the Hastings Center in Garrison, NY. He is a nationally known ethicist, lecturer, and author. He is a co-author of Organizational Ethics in Healthcare, which was awarded the 2002 Book of the Year by the American College of Healthcare Executives. He received his PhD in 1990 from St. Louis University, with a concentration in theological ethics and he is a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities.

Catholic Health East is a multi-institutional Catholic health system, which is co-sponsored by 15 religious congregations and Hope Ministries, a Public Juridic Person within Catholic Health East. Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, the System provides the means to ensure the continuation of the Catholic identity and operational strength of the Sponsors' health ministries, which are located within 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida.

The System includes acute care hospitals, free-standing and hospital-based skilled nursing facilities, residential facilities, free-standing behavioral health and rehabilitation facilities, and numerous ambulatory and community based health services. Catholic Health East facilities employ approximately 43,000 full time employees as partners in ministry.
