Maxis Health System to Join Catholic Health East

For Immediate Release
May 3, 2004

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA. (May 3, 2004) – Catholic Health East (CHE), one of the nation’s leading Catholic healthcare systems, announced today its intention to include the Maxis Health System (Carbondale, PA) as the newest member of its System of health organizations. Subject to the approval of the CHE Sponsors Council, completion of due diligence, and necessary court approval, the effective date of the transition of Maxis into CHE will be July 1, 2004.

“Catholic Health East’s Mission is to be a transforming, healing presence within the communities it serves. It is due, in large part, to the compatibility of CHE’s Mission with that of Maxis and the IHM Congregation that this affiliation is being pursued,” said Maxis Health System President and CEO Jean Coughlin, IHM.

“The values and culture of CHE are also consistent with those of Maxis and the IHM Congregation. This partnership promises to further the healing mission of both organizations,” said CHE President and CEO Robert V. Stanek.

Maxis Health System, an integrated delivery network, is comprised of Marian Community Hospital, Tri-County Human Services Center, Inc., Maxis Medical Services, Complete Pharmacy Services and Maxis Foundation, which includes Marian Community Hospital Auxiliary. Located in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, Maxis Health System and its affiliated organizations are sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Once Maxis officially joins CHE, it will become its 21st regional health corporation and its 16th Sponsor. Catholic Health East is a multi-institutional Catholic health system, which is co-sponsored by 14 religious congregations and Hope Ministries, a Public Juridic Person within Catholic Health East. Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, the System provides the means to ensure the continuation of the Catholic identity and operational strength of the sponsors’ health ministries, which are located within 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida.

The System includes 31 acute care hospitals, 40 freestanding and hospital-based skilled nursing facilities, 22 residential facilities, four freestanding behavioral health and rehabilitation facilities, and numerous ambulatory and community based health services. Catholic Health East facilities employ approximately 43,000 full time employees as partners in ministry. Catholic Health East has four divisions, the Southeast Division in Tampa, Florida; the Northeast Division in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Mid-Atlantic and Continuing Care Divisions in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
