ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA UNIT
Implementation
McAuley Hall, the 16-bed Mercy Medical dementia SCU (special care unit) was developed to respond to the special needs of patients experiencing all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. A special program of care was designed to provide a protective, low-stimulus environment that is safe, predictable, secure, and stable. Creative recreational therapy, that includes active involvement of family, assures that each patient is provided with individualized care. The patients of the SCU are also integrated into facility-wide pastoral care and recreational therapy activities. This holistic approach has been very successful in addressing the needs of this population as reflected by a comment from the Joint Commission Surveyor who stated, The McAuley dementia program is exactly what a dementia SCU should be.
