Description of the Best Practice
NON-VIOLENT CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING
Implementation
The eight-hour certification class began in October 1995, and all staff have now attended. One class is held per month for new employees and staff members that the nurse managers feel need an in-depth review. This would include any staff member who has been injured frequently or has been involved in an abuse/neglect investigation. While attending this class, staff members learn to identify useful non-verbal and verbal techniques for the prevention and de-escalation of acting out behaviors. They come to understand physical principles of personal safety techniques to avoid resident and staff injury. The class teaches staff to understand and develop team intervention strategies and techniques that are utilized by behavior specialists in care plans.
