Description of the Best Practice
K.A.R.E. PROGRAM
Implementation
The K.A.R.E. Program (Kids and Residents Explore) is a school-based, intergenerational program which offers a full range of activities in an out of the classroom ranging from computer technology experiences to creative writing programs. Residents and students meet two to three times weekly throughout the school year. Highlights of the partnership include: a study of plant and bird life on the grounds of the facility, leading to the certification of their backyard by the National Wildlife Federation; and a collection of intergenerational writings on display at Barnes and Noble. The K.A.R.E. Program was awarded the Community Bridge Award by the Holyoke Public Schools.
