Description of the Best Practice & Implementation
The Dinner with the Doctor program is a creative approach to educate the citizens of Broward County on health care. Presented to the community for more than seven years, the program has provided over 350 health lectures to over 15,000 individuals annually (approximately 105,000 to date).

In alliance with its mission statement and core values, Holy Cross Health Ministries continues to demonstrate its on going commitment to the local community. Providing health care education to individuals and encouraging them to be informed health care consumers and advocates for their own health care the Dinner with the Doctor lecture series accomplishes the is goal.

The Dinner with the Doctor community series is coordinated by the Public Relations Department. Lectures are advertised in the local newspaper, community bulletins and local access cable stations. Holy Cross Hospital and Medical Group physicians present weekly lectures (50 lectures per year) and have provided expertise on a variety of topics to the people of Broward County. Lecture series topics have included:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Knee and Joint Pain
  • Cancer
  • Back Problems and Care
  • Heart Health

From the moment guests enter the Holy Cross Hospital campus, they are welcomed to the lecture series. Complimentary valet parking is made available and provides necessary assistance to senior participants. In addition, each guest is provided a nutritious boxed meal which they are invited to enjoy during or following the lecture. Guests enjoy the benefits of a fully equipped auditorium with modern audio and visual aids. Often, handouts with further information are also provided to guest lecture participants. A question and answer period, in addition to an on-site raffle are always included at the conclusion of a lecture.

Heralded as one of South Florida’s most innovative community education projects, the Dinner with the Doctor lecture series enjoys great success and serves its mission; to educate the community on pertinent health care topics.
