Implementation In 1986, Holy Cross Hospital initiated HEALTHI-TOT, an educational program for children. Impressed with the highly successful results of this program, Holy Cross launched a study to determine how such a program might benefit the broader community. The findings of the research reinforced the Hospitals determination to provide health education for parents in low-income families and for the caregivers in child day care centers in Broward County. By the Spring of 1990, Goodstart began its pilot program approved for continuing education for child caregivers. Goodstart is an innovative health education program for licensed child day care centers and homes in the community. Classes, seminars and childrens learning activities are structured to meet the unique education needs of caregivers, pre-kindergarten children and their parents. The Goodstart programs mission is to provide health education for caregivers, parents, and children affiliated with low-income child day care centers and homes in the community. It shares a relationship with and provides essential educational services to over 100 community day care centers. Nurses visit the individual child day care centers/homes and provide on-site education to the children. In addition, health education seminars are offered throughout the year at Holy Cross Hospital for the caregivers and parents. Approaching its 10th year anniversary, the program has provided educational services to over 4,150 individuals. Continuing education topics taught by physicians, nurses, dieticians have included: HIV/AIDS/Hepatitis and Infection Control/Universal Precautions Attention Deficit Disorder Child Abuse Conflict Resolution Medical Emergencies Health and Nutrition Pledging itself to leadership in health education, the Goodstart program fulfills the Ministries mission by providing an innovative venue to meet the health needs of the community, especially the poor and its children. The success of the Goodstart program has been recognized and awarded by the Jack and Jill Nursery, Inc. and The Holy Cross Hospital Foundation. Time Frame Financial Profile Operating Budget: $15,000 Holy Cross Support: $15,000; $150,000 since 1982 Other Funding Sources: American Association of Order of Malta in South Florida, Amaturo Family Foundation, Bastien Memorial Fund, Broward Community Foundation, Doctors Hospital Foundation, Sisters of Mercy, Sun-Sentinel Childrens Fund, McDonald Childrens Charities, Dr. & Mrs. S. Brostoff, Mr. & Mrs. G.R. Handley, St. Elizabeth Community Health Center Foundation, and others Outcome Health education for caregivers, parents and children affiliated with low-income child day care centers and homes in the community will enhance the quality of life of the community, especially in low-income areas.
