Increasingly, as the laity take on more and more responsibility for leadership and sponsorship throughout Catholic Health East, it is incumbent upon our leaders to be well grounded in the principles and traditions of Catholicism…and what inspired our Sponsors to initiate and support their health care ministries. Today’s leaders need enhanced competencies, and new leaders need to be prepared to fulfill the privileged responsibilities entrusted to them by the Sponsors and Founders of our work.
Among the skills and competencies that today’s leaders need to possess include the ability to apply the principles of the tradition in daily work; make decisions aligned with CHE values; lead reflective processes; nurture one’s personal spirit; glean strength and courage for today’s work from the richness of our heritage; and call others to servant leadership in the ministry.
In order to enhance the growth of these competencies, CHE developed a comprehensive series of opportunities for ministry formation - a dynamic growth process involving the personal experience of participants, the Catholic tradition as it affects health care, and the demands of today’s healthcare environment. Collectively, these learning and sharing opportunities fall under the aegis of the Institute for Excellence in Ministry.
Since its inception in 2007, hundreds of colleagues, board members and Sponsors have availed themselves of Institute for Excellence in Ministry programs, seminars, and retreats. The Institute’s offerings are grouped into four basic areas: Ministry Formation, Ethics Champions, Spirituality in the Workplace, and Sponsorship Education. Each of these four areas includes several specific offerings; for example, among the Institute’s Ministry Formation programs are…
- Program for Excellence in Ministry – comprised of six 2-day sessions over a period of three years, this ongoing program for executive leaders is comprised of groups of 30 persons from various CHE entities functioning as stable learning communities. These sessions explore topics such as: Where did this ministry
begin? How does it continue…and flourish? What is the laity’s role in this ministry’s future?
- Foundations of Catholic Health Care – these two-day seminars, created for all leadership teams, explore the history of the Biblical roots of Catholic health care, provide a comprehensive overview of Catholic health care ministry, and provides an overview of the key moral and ethical traditions of Catholic health care.
- Healthcare Ministry Basics for Leaders - a one day introduction for Directors and Managers, this program reviews origins of Catholic health care, provides an overview of what makes Catholic health care “Catholic”; and explores our role in this ministry.
The “Ethics Champions” programs, which have evolved and grown exponentially over the last few years, include separate educational modules for acute care and continuing care settings, as well as sessions focused on organizational ethics and other special topics. The CHE Ethics website (www.che.org/ethics) houses a rich array of topics, modules, and case studies, as well as libraries of other CHE resources on clinical and organizational ethics issues as well as links to online ethics courses and resources outside of CHE.
Sponsorship Education includes programs for CHE board members, consultations and resources for religious congregations, trustee orientations, and the Collaborative Formation Program, which provides individuals with opportunities for growth in the personal, theological and professional competencies required for sponsorship.
Two of the Institute’s newest offerings include Spirituality on the Workplace and Spiritual Care Champions.
Spirituality in the Workplace is the practice of reflection and celebration that reminds colleagues of the meaning of life and the dignity of our work. A series of structures and processes give colleagues opportunities to realize the sacredness of everyday encounters; the program recognizes the passion that colleagues have for the Mission of Catholic Health East and makes that Mission real for all of us, as we ourselves are transformed and healed.
The new Spiritual Care Champions programming aims to provide continuing education for those interested in theology and pastoral practice. The program, a collaboration of 10 Catholic healthcare systems, offers two webinars a month, one focused on Themes in Systematic Theology and the other on Themes in Pastoral Theology. Each webinar reaches hundreds of Catholic health system employees in up to 90 locations nationwide.
I am proud of the depth and breadth of spiritual and ethical educational offerings now available through our Institute for Excellence in Ministry. Through the leadership and support of Sr. Julie Casey, Philip Boyle, Sr. Karen Helfenstein, Martha Conroy and others, CHE’s Institute for Excellence in Ministry promises to be the major vehicle for the development and provision of ministry formation throughout the system.
