In the fall of 1997, 12 religious sponsors brought their health ministries
together to create a new co-sponsored health system -- Catholic Health East
(CHE). Allegany Health System, Eastern Mercy Health System, and Sisters of
Providence Health System combined legally and operationally to create CHE and
was founded January 8, 1998.
The religious sponsors formed CHE to strengthen the role and identity of the
Catholic health ministry in the eastern United States. Catholic Health East
is grounded in the sponsors' historic commitment to the dignity of every
individual, the sacredness of life, and special dedication to caring for the
poor, the elderly, and the disadvantaged.
Today, Catholic Health East serves as a vehicle for Sponsors to maintain the Catholic identity of their sponsored health ministries and ensure the continued vitality of their mission of compassionate service. The System provides the structure for ongoing sponsorship, governance,
and strategic direction of the health care organizations, while
providing more cost effective access to programs, services and expertise, in
order to enhance the positioning of sponsored facilities in their
local communities.
The system is governed by the Sponsors Council and Board of Directors.
The sponsors, board, management, and associates of Catholic Health East share
a profound commitment to continuing the healing ministry of Jesus and being a
transforming healing presence in the communities they serve.
